My students are energetic, talkative, and full of questions. They love to explore, are curious, and have an unquestionable desire to learn! They move around constantly, love to look at pictures, and discover new things.
My students are four and five years old.
They are from different cultures and speak different languages. We are halfway through the year, and they are showing so much progress! They have learned a great amount of English. Even if they aren't sure of the word, they have learned to communicate in other ways. Some of our students are even able to translate for others who may not understand what they are saying. Our school is in a high poverty area. The preschool program I work for is a high-risk program which means that these students are only accepted into the program if they come from a low-income family or have a history of family problems. Some of these students come to school to escape from the problems they may be seeing or may be a part of in their home. Our students are excited to come to school because many have not ever played with anyone their own age.
My students love to discover, explore and ask questions. We have a need in our class for a better variety of materials. We do not have as many interesting, creative, or non-fiction materials as we may like. I envision my class getting to read My Big World with Clifford as a class, complete various activities from them, and engage their curiosity. I also love the fact that they can take these materials home with them. Many of these students don't have academic materials in their homes, let alone magazine subscriptions. This would be an amazing learning experience, and would encourage them to love to read!
This project will provide a new genre of materials that our classroom and our students do not have.
They will be able to see pictures of real live people and animals in new ways. It will foster their imagination, creativity, and knowledge. I also hope to encourage and promote literacy, and the desire to read.
