Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine a classroom where art weaves into every subject! For example, while students are investigating rocks in science , they take out their sketchbooks and draw a diagram of the rock cycle using oil pastels. This is my vision, boosting my students' learning by integrating art into every subject.
My twenty-six second grade students are all English language learners.
They come from a high poverty area located in Southern California. All students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. These students come to second grade already one or more grade levels behind in reading. A successful learning experience is critical for all.
My Project
My plan is to incorporate art into my students' everyday learning. Students will each have a sketchbook that they will use throughout the year. In these books, my students will be able to respond to various learning activities using different art mediums: watercolor, colored pencils and oil pastels. By integrating art into all subject areas, students will be able to access their creativity and imagination, something that is often left out of the classroom because of cost and time constraints. With the help of Disneyland CREATE and donors, I will be able to provide my students with a variety of art supplies to help them create, imagine, collaborate, inspire and express themselves through art projects.
My goal is to allow students to be self-expressive, and to apply their knowledge of academic subjects in creative ways.
