I am currently a middle school math teacher in a high needs area. My students are diverse learners and the classroom would benefit from these basic supplies including markers, pencils, pens, crayons, etc.
My students have to overcome many learning barriers and learn required school concepts with little or no help from their parents.
Their parents are unable to help them in the educational area due to lack of knowledge and understanding of the English language as well as knowledge of the required school concepts. My students work hard and often support their mothers and fathers by running household errands and watching younger siblings. Unfortunately, another thing that my students have in common is that their families are struggling financially. Within my school the majority of the students qualify for the state's free or reduced meal program. Due to the budget cuts schools are facing, teachers in my school are no longer able to personally give each student the resources they desire. Supplying my students/classroom with these materials would be a small step but it would give us one less obstacle to overcome.
Students are required to understand the many ideas and concepts from all areas of education in middle school. I love doing hands-on activities but my students are 11 and 12 year old children and have a tendency to lose things. Others are embarrassed when instructed to take out their school supplies and they cannot. Not because they forgot or don't want to but because they cannot afford them. I would love to create a supply center for those students so they can get what they need and save them the embarrassment. Supplying my classroom with a variety of basic school supplies would be a blessing for our classroom.
With your help our classroom will set up the students for school success with these basic, necessary school supplies.
