Launching a Reading Year

My students need new books, like "Bone: One Volume Edition," "The Chronicles of Chrestomanci," and other titles, to get them ready and excited for a reading year!

My Students

"Please, can we have more independent reading time?" After my first funded Donorschoose project last year, my students couldn't get enough "IDR." The more quality books I can provide in the classroom, the more my students (even the skeptics) have found that they enjoy reading and being a reader.

My 7th grade students come from all over the city, many traveling more than an hour one-way, to attend our title one public charter school.

Although some already enjoy reading, others have not yet discovered the authors, series, and genres that take their breath away. However, a reading culture in my school has begun to catch fire. As more quality literature and titles enter my classroom, I can see the tone of the conversation shifting. My students are discussing the books they love with their friends, making recommendations, and eagerly awaiting their turn to get their hands on the most recent feature in our daily book commercials. Keeping my students curious and active readers requires a continual flow of books that can engage my diverse learners. Access to quality fantasy, comedy, action and adventure, mystery, stories about friendship, and graphic novels help me to reach each reader where they are and move them forward as readers and learners.

My Project

My students need new books. The books in my proposal are not only gripping, entertaining reads, but also provide important lessons that allow my students to think about who they are and what their role is in the larger community. The picture books I have selected are focused around "risky topics" and social justice themes that will familiarize students with the norms of reading in literature circle groups, while also inspiring issue-based research and writing on a social topic of their choosing. The remaining series and popular books will give my students a chance to interact with and try on a number of different titles and genres as they discover who they are as readers, and what they might like to experiment with as authors. Ideally, these experiences with quality texts will help them to develop a love of reading and literature that will help carry them through their academic and professional lives as they learn and grow.

As my new crop of seventh graders enter my classroom, I'd like them to see that books and reading are at the center of our work together.

We can learn, grow, and connect to one another through reading...if we only have access to just the right book.
