Lather Up with Deaf-Made Soap!

My students need to learn practical chemistry skills, like soap making with fats, lye and oils, to understand chemical processes, as well as how to (carefully) have fun! We also need a blender, pots, glass jars and thermometers.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Oyler's classroom raised $376

This project is fully funded

My Students

My students are eager to learn chemistry and are curious to experiment with chemicals. Given the danger of chemicals, obviously, chemistry needs to be taught using safety precautions and in a proper facility. Soap-making is a great lesson in chemistry!

I am honored to teach a large number of the Deaf students in Utah.

The students come from families throughout Utah to our school to be with their Deaf peers. In addition to providing this close-knit community, my students are as eager (or more?) to learn about chemistry and to experiment. Soap-making is a perfect blend of chemistry, along with carefully planned, safe procedures in the lab. The students are excited to do, see and make practical chemical products, rather than only mix vinegar and baking soda. The school is a myriad of students, many of whom don't get to play in the kitchen to bake cakes, or to even experiment with food coloring. Some may have the opportunity to do those basic experiments, but soap making involves more safety issues and more advanced chemistry. With the stick blender, fats and oils, plus the scents to make the soap possess pleasant aromas, the students will be thrilled to experience real-life chemistry!

My Project

The students will have the opportunity to use their knowledge of safe lab procedures, lab behavior and chemistry-based skills to not only complete an interesting lab experiment, but to create something fun, exciting and practical. If they wanted to, they could repeat this experiment at home and sell the soap! Deaf students deserve a chance to do interesting chemistry experiments, but are often overlooked due to their hearing loss. Also, many chemistry classes focus solely on chemical procedures found on worksheets or in textbooks, but never truly experience chemistry at its finest. This experiment could change that. How many classes (science and otherwise) drag on without provoking and implementing independent, creative thought from the students? By including 3 different kinds of oils in this project, we can make 3 different kinds of soaps to not only learn the chemical process of soap making, but to compare the physical differences in the materials (reactants) used.

This project would mean the world, and show the students that not only are science classes fun, they're practical and can produce products that they use every day.

By making our own soap, students will realize how straightforward the process can be, as opposed to mass produced "soap" that contains various chemicals only attributed to shelf-life. I believe that this experiment could be a great turning point for some students who are doubting their science skills, or who are anxious about science.
