My students need Spanish language books, videos, manipulatives like dolls, multicultural play food, and puppets to interact with during their language learning.
A book is a version of the world. If you do not like it, ignore it or offer your own version in return. -Salman Rushdie. I am a traveling teacher who has Language and Culture class in different rooms and creatively find ways to use materials in order to enhance language learning and exploration.
The students at my school are truly unique.
They are enthusiastic students who come from very different cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds. They are so curious about the world around them and are eager to be exposed to new experiences. The school is part of a unique charter whose focus is on exploratory learning. We are a school that is turned into a museum every 9 weeks with the students as the docents. They also see how learning is used in real life by going on expeditions around the Atlanta area several times a month.
My Project
Help the K through 7th grade students at the school have access to a multicultural library that will expand their knowledge of the Spanish language. I use songs, games, dances, interactive videos and books to connect the Spanish language with students and their everyday lives. By the end of the school year I hope for my students to develop an appreciation for learning another language and for them to become more culturally competent. Since I only see K through 5th grade students once a week, I am challenged with the task of making each class period meaningful and to have a lasting impact. Whenever I read a new Spanish book, they are amazed at their ability to comprehend parts of the story even though it is in another language. Students will be able to explore more interesting and engaging topics that go along with the different stories.
A donation to this project will help build the Language and Culture program.
Becoming more culturally competent is becoming more important in our ever changing world. If we enable children to learn how to accept and understand others no matter what language they speak or what their cultural background is, we can help create a better future.
