Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

At the end of the school year, I want my students to be more informed of current events in the world around them. "If you don't read the newspaper you are uninformed." -Mark Twain I would love for my students to have Scholastic News weekly magazines.

My third grade classroom consists of 22 diverse learners.

A high percentage of the students on our campus receive free or reduced lunch. Our Title I campus is made up of over 600 students. Our population is primarily Hispanic and English Language Learners.

My Project

Scholastic News magazines cover important current events that are grade appropriate. Students will be exposed to important academic vocabulary in every issue. This is extremely crucial for my English Language Learners. Essential language arts concepts such as main idea, analyzing text structures, and identifying synonyms and antonyms are reinforced in each issue. Scholastic News magazines provide maps, graphs, charts, and timelines to build students' ability to understand visual texts.

Scholastic News magazines will support critical comprehension skills in my third grade classroom on a weekly basis.

These nonfiction texts are written to increase in difficulty throughout the year. I believe exposing my students to current events would assist in developing active citizens in our global community. Additionally, I believe that this project will help prepare my students for standardized tests through reading comprehension activities.
