My Students
"In the end, we conserve only what we love. We will love only what we understand. We will understand only what we are taught." - Baba Dioum, Senegalese poet. We want our students to find the beauty in nature and wildlife, and find a way in which to share that with our community.
Our sixth grade students participate in a project based learning program at a suburban school.
Our team is made up of the four content areas ( math, science, ELA, and social studies). It also includes an art and special ed teacher.
Our students are 6th graders at a suburban public school in South Carolina in a large urban/suburban school district. There are nearly 100 students on our Project Based Learning team that we are piloting for our school. These students range in abilities, backgrounds, and motivation, but the project based learning framework helps engage them in our content and community.
Our student population is made up predominantly of under-privileged students. 51% are on free or reduced lunch. Our students are predominately African American students, with a small proportion of students who speak English as a second language or qualify for special education services.
My Project
Students will work in collaborative teams to design and create proposals for new exhibits at our local. This will include a oral presentation and written informational text following the Common Core standards. In addition, they will create maps and three dimensional models using the materials that will require students to use measurement and scale following the Common Core math standards. Proposals will include the geography and climate of the region where the animal lives, human influences and threats to the animal species.
Coming into sixth grade our students struggle in many ways, but one social skill the lack is communication and teamwork. Working in a team of core content teachers for project, these are two important skills they need. Working in teams to design exhibits will give them opportunities to practice the communication and teamwork skills they need to be successful in life, and that we are working on in class in a project that recreates a real life scenario
