One of the most important subject areas for students today is computer science. Last year, I became involved in teaching coding through Code.org. This year, I wanted to take it a step further. I was inspired by visiting other schools, and I began a coding club at our school.
My students are in fourth and fifth grade, and are from various economic and social backgrounds.
We represent various countries, including India, Korea, and China. Our school is small, with about 750 students in grades K-5. Our school is part of a large metropolitan school district.
My Project
Fourth and fifth grade students will join me before school to learn about coding. Since I will be learning right along with them, we plan to use the different kits available to guide us through some basic programming. I selected several books that will also allow us to expand our programming skills with the Raspberry Pi kits.
My students and I will gain first hand experience and knowledge of basic coding. Each year I hope to take the coding club and computer science programs at our school a step further.
I began teaching coding to my students after attending a staff development about computer science.
After trying out some basic coding myself, I could see the value in teaching it to my students. Through coding, students learn to persevere, to edit and check their work, to experiment and try different methods when things don't work, and to read directions carefully. The skills they learn through coding can be applied in many other areas beyond computer science.
