Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Dance feeds the soul, and is the voice of the artist. As dance becomes more and more dynamic, and breakdancing is here to stay, I just want to keep my kids safe as I teach them new lifts and tricks. We dance on a concrete cafeteria floor- these mats will be so useful!
Dance is one way to keep our students connected to school.
For some of my students, it is their reason for coming. They are hungry for new skills, and are constantly wanting to push themselves to try challenging skills on the dance floor. I am thrilled for the opportunity to inspire my students to be in school every day, to stay active, and to keep learning. This school is an under performing school with no dance/performing arts budget, and no money to buy these mats on our own.
My Project
These mats are simple tumbling mats- the students will be able to learn new partner stunts, (swing dancing), lifts, (classical), and tricks (all styles!) safely, on a much better surface than the concrete floor (with me spotting of course) - The students will be able to learn basic tumbling skills and how to safely lift a partner - and they will be able to be more creative in their own choreography with how they interact with each other.
We are a self funded program, and a growing one.
With 180 students in a small school, that's nearly 15% of our students already in the dance program. Art is one way to keep students in school, and ultimately that is my goal- to create new reasons and inspiration for students to attend every day and achieve. These mats will allow me to be more innovative in my teaching and keep interest and challenge levels high.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
