Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every student in our school attends a structured music program about once per week and has music opportunities before school. We use Orff Xylophones (marimbas) to provide hands on opportunities to make music with others. We sing, dance, play recorders, hand drums and xylophones together.

Our students are from a community with a high poverty rate with no money for these families to provide enrichment activities such as music for their children.

Our school is a Title 1 school with over 80% of our students on free or reduced lunch. They like music. Especially when they get over their fear of failure and take risks to learn something new. That's when you see the smiles. Research is proving that singing, playing and making music in groups helps students improve skills like listening, focus and attention. Important skills for anyone to be successful. Playing music together also develops social skills such as respect, tolerance, patience, kindness, supporting/helping others and working together toward a common goal-making music. Our music program will help kids experience music and develop these skills.

My Project

Our music program uses Orff and Kodaly concepts. Singing, playing the xylophones, metalophones and drums are all integrated into the music program from K-5. We also play West African and Afro-Caribbean music by forming ensembles. Moving large instruments easily and safely allows us to provide more time for playing and reduces the time needed for logistics. That is why we need the carts for the large instruments. Our plan is to get more xylophones to get more students involved. Your donation will help us purchase xylophone carts. They will be used every day by hundreds of children for years to come.

You donation will allow more students to use the instruments and to do more activities during music class and before school.

Getting kids involved in music is the goal. Playing music that interests them helps to get them involved. Xylophone carts will offer a safe and easy way to move big instruments leaving more time for music - singing, playing, and movement and playing instruments with others.
