My Students

My class has been tracking the journey of the monarch butterflies since they left Mexico in February. We have traveled through Texas and Utah, just to name a few states. Our journey will end in Canada and it would be nice to have our own monarchs begin a new journey from our classroom.

My students are from a low income area and resources in my school are very scarce, especially when it comes to science.

I teach second grade and this is a crucial time for students and lots of hands on inquiry and repetition are required in order for students to retain knowledge. My students are eager to learn and are excited about our Journey North project. Many of my students haven't seen a microscope or slide and do not know what it is. If I am granted the materials requested, it could open up a new door of learning for my students and given them a new scientific view of life.

My Project

We have been doing many things on our journey, such as designing and creating maps, podcasting on the Internet and creating line graphs in math class to display the change in body temperatures of the monarch butterflies. I am asking for microscopes to view the genetic makeup of the butterflies so that students can see the cells up close. Since we are tracking the migration of the monarch butterflies it would be nice to raise our own monarch butterflies in our classroom so that students can get hands on experience observing the life cycle and migration process. The books I ordered will serve as reference materials for my students. These materials will make our project come to life and bring a new experience into our classroom.

This journey is very important because I believe in Project Based Instruction and this study has traveled across the curriculum and even gone international.

I would like to see it end completing the circle bringing everything together, making a connection. I want my students to make an actual connection between the classroom and life. The materials I am asking for will make that happen.
