It's All Greek to Me! Studying Greek Myths in Second Grade
My students need non-fiction books on Ancient Greek culture and Greek myths. They also need activity books on Greek life so that they can create a "Greek Gathering"
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are voracious readers and love to get their hands on books of whatever we are reading. However, they are a lot more than just readers! They are students who love to do, question, perform, and create with the material that we are studying in class.
My students are 28 gifted second graders in a Chicago Public School.
They love to read and engage in the material we are learning in unique ways. For example, last year when we were learning about contractions, students dressed up like doctors and went into "surgery" to cut up and stitch words back together. I am hoping that my students will have an equally if not more engaging interactive time with our studies on Ancient Greek life and myths! They are going to be so excited to engage with this material!
My Project
My students will read the non-fiction texts in National Geographic Kids Everything Mythology: Begin Your Quest for Facts, Photos, and Fun Fit for Gods and Goddesses about Ancient Greek life. They will begin to research ways that they can create and experience Greek city life in our classroom for a "Greek Gathering" day. Students will also listen to and read Greek Myths and Classic Myths to Read Aloud: The Great Stories of Greek and Roman Mythology to learn about the phrases and ideas that were created back then that we still use today. Students will get a chance to act out some of the myths, as well! Finally, students will be able to choose current fiction texts like the "Beasts of Olympus" series to connect what they've been reading to what authors are writing about now!
Your donations will directly affect the lives of these students because they get to be immersed in a topic through several different texts.
They will also get to interactively engage with the topic by living a typical day in the life of the Ancient Greek people in our own classroom. If you were a student, wouldn't YOU remember that sort of experience? I hope that the lessons in the myths and the universal truths told through them over and over will find a place in the hearts of my students!
