We have over 30 countries represented at our school.

Our students have different traditions, religions, cultural beliefs, skin colors, and languages. They live and learn in a neighborhood rich in diversity. Though they are taught to tolerate each other's differences, appreciation and respect for these differences is scarce. Deeply rooted stereotypes and beliefs about different cultures often win out over acceptance and equality.

My Project

I would like to start a project that will give students a deep understanding of other cultures. Using the Internet and each other, the students will find out what drives a culture other than their own. They will search traditional sources for information about the dress, food, traditions, religions, history, etc. of another culture. They will also dive deeper into another culture in non-traditional ways. They will search blogs, social media sites, and conduct interviews to paint a realistic picture of what is like to live everyday as a member of another culture. Students will use the paper and ink to print their research and final work. They will use the markers and glue to create beautiful presentations of their culture. We will use the giant inflatable globe to bring the world into our classroom.

Becoming immersed in another culture will open students' eyes to the reality of humanity.

We all have feelings, dreams, hopes, and beliefs. They will come to understand that even though someone looks or acts differently, that does not make them wrong. My hope is that completing a project like this will help them to not only tolerate other cultures but also to appreciate and celebrate them.
