Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Some of us live for that moment when we get to bring our sparkly posters or PowerPoint to share a presentation. Others, not so much.
I have a total of 47 8th graders. They have lots to say but don't exactly know how to say it. Guiding them step by step with iPads is a way to to get them there!
My 8th graders are boisterous, opinionated, and reflective.
They are in their last year at our lovely, arts-integrated K-8 charter school. Our community emphasizes teamwork, empathy, reflection, and perseverance -- all qualities that are not immediately visible in their surrounding neighborhood.
Most students come from urban, low-income homes where higher education is a yet unattained dream. They understand that education will help them achieve their goals in the future, but having only being exposed to their local streets, I can see that my students do not yet understand the need for the skills that we stress.
They are great verbal communicators but still need help in written expression and formal presentations. Understanding other ideas are also difficult because most students come from low literacy backgrounds or are learning English as they go.
My Project
My classroom is organized into 6 groups of four students and I foresee being able to allow a single group to work with the iPads or have five groups of five and allow each group to have 1 iPad to work with.
I first want to introduce the iPads during Writing Conferences. I'd like students to be able to actively practice typing papers and editing each others' work using the tools available through Apps and Google. I also want them to collaboratively create presentations, websites, and blogs while improving their typing WPM.
Once this becomes a routine, I will introduce different apps for students with varied needs. For my accelerated students, I can see the opportunity to give them extra articles to respond to when they finish work early, and for my struggling students, there will be times where I could give them modified classwork through using the iPad.
This is just the beginning, as I'll collaborate with our tech, science, and math teachers for our final interdisciplinary expo.
By having this project funded my students will again be reminded that it is not just our insular community that cares for each other but people on the outside care for us as well.
It will help diversify the learning and better meet individual needs. I hope that before my students enter high school, they will become literate in the technology skills they'll need for success in high school and beyond!
