Once you step into Ms. Traynor's Art Room, you are a mover, a shaker and a creative art-maker! Every student, K - 5, learns to use art materials and techniques--from painting to printmaking, ceramics to fiber arts--with interdisciplinary lessons incorporating art history, criticism, and technology.
The halls and classrooms of Love T.
Nolan Elementary School are constantly filled with eager voices. Our students are super smart, incredibly funny, and genuinely excited about learning. Unfortunately, the majority of them are also underprivileged. A full 85% of Nolan's population receives free or reduced lunch and everyone is eligible for free breakfast. Oftentimes, we can't even provide students workbooks of their own, let alone the resources they need to experience an innovative, technology-infused learning environment. According to a recent study, it is exceptionally difficult for those born into poverty in the state of Georgia to overcome their given socioeconomic status. The odds may appear to be stacked against our kids, but we're here to break down those walls, reject dismal projections and give them the chance to shine by any means necessary!
iPads help my students engage in meaningful dialogue, collaborate with each other, and get those creative juices flowing! There are so many truly engaging uses for iPads in the Art classroom, it's hard to narrow it down. Here are a few of my favorites: voting activities allow students to develop and think about their personal preferences for works of art; students can record and share their artist's statements; small groups view presentations at their tables and engage in meaningful discourse about the topic at hand amongst each other--everyone gets a chance to talk and no one has to raise her hand and wait to speak; and, of course, iPads double as digital cameras! I can document student work and they can create their own digital photography projects. Students will also have access to applications and programs that they may never have been exposed to without these tablets, namely the Adobe Suite.
My students' education is just as important as any other kid's but with such limited resources it doesn't always feel that way.
Having enough iPads for each table in the Art room will make such a difference to them and to me. If I could afford to pay for tablets out of pocket, I most certainly would, but I'm just not able. That is where YOU come in! Tools like these give my kids the education and experiences they not only crave, but deserve! Thank you so much for your time and consideration.
