My second grade dual language students are eager to learn in both Spanish and English. The iPad mini will give students an additional tool to practice their skills. With over 1.2 million apps available the possibilities are endless.
This year I have 17 dual language learners, 11 girls and 6 boys.
I have lots of different countries represented in my classroom including Guatemala, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Brazil and Colombia. Many of my students are from lower economic status and therefore do not have access to technology at home. I think it is important that I give them access to as much of it as possible at school.
My Project
I want my students to utilize the iPads for a variety of different things, particularly to practice their reading/math skills on a daily basis. Since they are all learning a 2nd language it is imperative that they each get lots of practice with the new language. Currently, there are over 1.2 million apps available at the Apple app store. I feel having access to such an abundant source of information where apps can be downloaded to practice various skills will help close the gap for some of those students and enable them to see and/or learn about things they thought they'd never have a chance to experience.
With these iPad minis in my classroom, students can have access to the technology every day, which would improve their problem solving skills as well as their literacy development. These iPads would allow my students time to work independently each day, which would allow me time to work with smaller groups of students.

Many of my students have little or no access to technology, except when they are at school. And even when they are at school, it is limited. Getting these iPads would allow my students to "keep with the times", even if they can't afford it.
