Our typical day is pretty fast-paced. We start off with a question of the day, which helps us build community. We share our answers in order to work on our listening and speaking skills. We also tell a partner "I am ready to learn today" and ask "are you ready to learn today? Let's get busy!"
My students are inquisitive and eager to learn.
Most students in our school come from low socio-economic status families which brings a diverse set of needs to the classroom. My students would benefit from iPads to use in learning stations during math and reading small groups. Bringing technology into the classroom will not only give them skills they need in a high world, but gives more learning options in order to engage different learning styles. Our district recently provided an Osmo to our classroom and having iPads in the classroom would increase the likelihood that we would use it! iPads offer diverse activities and games and many apps support different learning levels. My students have very diverse skill levels and I want to make sure that they all engaged and have fun learning!
My Project
Students will use the iPads in small groups of 3-5 students on a daily basis. They will use them in either math or reading small groups and occasionally in both. On fun Fridays they will be given free choice of a limited number apps that enhance what we are learning. Using iPads will not only help teach them the grade level skills they are working on, but it will also increase their independence as they learn to access and close the appropriate apps and choose from the activities provided for them. I have already seen students helping other students when we've borrowed iPads from other rooms to use the Osmo. iPads in our classroom will build our learning community. There are many options that can enhance their learning including reading/writing connection activities that will allow them to write and illustrate what they wrote about, vocabulary enriching activities and phonics activities, as well as number identification and number sense activities.
iPads in our classroom will give students the opportunity to practice those foundational skills needed for reading and to build a strong number sense foundation.
iPads will do this in a way that keeps learning fun and keeps students engaged.
