Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The standards for 7th grade math span a wide range of topics including integers, fractions, decimals, proportions, geometry, linear equations and more. As each section builds upon the previous one, finding ways to reinforce knowledge, by means other than worksheets, is very much needed.
The vast majority of my students come from low-income homes and access to technology is very limited.
As a school we are on the upper end of 60% qualifying for free and reduced lunch. While some students have some computer access, items like iPads and tablets are still a novelty that really excites them to participate in the activities.
My Project
During my Intensive Math classes, I rotate the students through various centers throughout the week. This includes small group instruction, assignments, computer activities, and the occasional math game. Each day the student can interact with the material in a different way and introducing the ability to allow students to do this on iPads would prove to be a great motivation. I occasionally allow students to use my personal tablet to complete a math activity once they finish the daily assignment and it always proves to be an exciting opportunity for them. In addition to allowing for great access to math tutorials and apps, the iPads will be used within the Intensive Reading class as well. Apps dealing with fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary will also engage the students throughout that class as well.
The students are in Intensive Classes for various reasons.
Some struggle with concepts while others simply have trouble being motivated by the material. iPads, and the excitement they will bring to the class, will greatly enhance the enthusiasm for learning and with the thousands of great apps and resources. It will be an ongoing process with which the students can grow.
