I will have more than thirty fifth graders who need to learn all subjects through technology and through the infusion of the arts. Every minute is used, but unfortunately there isn't adequate resources to best use every minute. Many students learn best through technology which is very outdated.
My students are amazing young people who are from an inner city environment where some families truly believe in education and other families are not very supportive of their child's education.
Many of my students struggle with attention disorders and often believe they are not capable of learning however, they can just in a different way. These students need very tactile and visual learning strategies typically involving technology to keep their attention. Also, most students come to school with few to no school supplies. About 80% of our district is free and reduced lunch. No matter what challenges my students face, they put their best effort into their work. They are proud to be a part of a fine and performing arts school. As fifth graders, they are seen as leaders in the building. They are model citizens as they walk at a level zero on the right side of the hallway. They bring their creativity from the classroom to the hallway as they display their artwork around the building.
My Project
With the aide of the iPad minis, students will be able to work in both groups and independently during centers. Much of my classroom is structured around a 90 minute block with 20 minute rotations and a 10 minute closure. During these rotations, the iPad minis will be utilized in different capacities. One app the students will learn to utilize is iMovie. iMovie is a free app that allows students to use create their own movie or use a trailer template to upload videos and pictures to create a powerful summarization of their learning from science experiments, math problems, or even to write their book reports. Many apps would be used for improving the students skill levels in all subjects. Class Dojo is one app that would be used for students to monitor their behavior. Another huge advantage to having the iPad minis is their wireless Internet. Students will not have to wait for the few computers in the room to conduct research. Students could take screen shots of important resources.
Overall, this would help my classroom to run more efficiently and effectively.
Students would have the tools necessary to help themselves succeed in a world that is advancing daily through technology. The iPad minis would help my students gain the confidence necessary to live and work in a technological world while meeting the Indiana Academic Standards while learning that the community cares about their needs and futures. Many students would increase not only cognitively, but also emotionally.
