iPad Mini for Library Catalog Use With Students

My students need 2 iPad minis with durable cases that can stand on their own for practice looking up books and authors in our library catalog.

My Students

I am the librarian in a K-8 grade building. I do not have an aide or clerk to help during library and check-out time. Our biggest class has 28 students and it is difficult to check-out books to students from behind the desk AND help students find the books they want to read at the same time.

My students range from Kindergarten to eighth grade.

We live in a small agricultural community with many students who drive from rural settings and other small towns within the county. We have many students with low socio-economic status. We have a small library that does not have a lot of space for big desktop computers. Having two iPad minis would save a lot of space, but still allow students to independently search for what they are looking for when the librarian is helping others.

My Project

We currently only have one computer in the library which I use for check-out. We do not have any computers for the students to use and practice looking up books independently on the online catalog. Having two iPad minis would shorten the line of students waiting to check-out and/or ask me a question. It would also allow students to find their books more quickly while improving their computer and searching skills. It would also open up the possibility of me, the librarian, to be able to be more mobile within the library helping students while allowing me to check-out books to students using one of the ipad minis instead of being stuck behind the computer desk.

I want to help students find books they LOVE, so that they will learn to LOVE to read.

Currently, I struggle to help the students find their favorite books because of time constraints, large class sizes, and lack of technology available. I have no control over the amount of library time each class has nor the classes sizes, but I feel that adding ipad minis for student catalog use will improve the quality and quantity of time we do have available in the library.
