My students need an iPad to use during our guided reading time. I have found in the past that the use of an iPad during this time is the ultimate resource.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
A typical day inside Fourth Grade Funky Town is very calming as we begin each day with classical, instrumental music. Students enter the room that is lit by natural, indirect lighting (we don't use our fluorescent bulbs). The atmosphere provides a comfortable learning environment daily.
The students at our school come from all walks of life.
Poverty is a large part of our school that affects almost every student in some form or fashion in our school. My students don't let their unfortunate home lives get to them. They are kids right?! They come in full of energy every day and are generally happy to be hanging out with me all while learning. It is our goal daily to treat others with respect, to be responsible for our actions, and to be ready for learning. In having fun, we need resources. Our school does provide us with some resources being that it is a Title I school. I would like to implement more of a 21st century classroom experience for my class. Our world is constantly changing and we have to teach students to learn on a multi-faceted platform, so that students have the tools they need to learn effectively. In stating that I would like to have a 21st century classroom I believe that our guided reading groups would flourish with the use of an iPad.
My Project
I meet daily with various groups of students in small guided reading groups. We read through various text that is on their level (which is typically lower than what is considered grade level). Teaching students from a high poverty background, I have learned that teaching them explicit vocabulary seen in the text is key in helping their comprehension of the text. When teaching them various vocabulary it is crucial to have definitions and even more visuals. I normally use my cell phone to look up various definitions or images to show the students for a better explanation. I also use apps on my phone to keep up with the students reading progress, that would be better suited with an iPad device. Students living in the next generation need more technological resources to guide their instructions and I believe an iPad would definitely help facilitate more learning in our groups.
This project will make a difference in my classroom by giving my students an opportunity to get visual representation of various vocabulary terms.
It will also help to chart their reading improvement and growth throughout the year. Students need support through the use of technology to help facilitate growth and development of their academic language. I believe an iPad will help students build confidence in their reading progression.
