Involve Me, And I'll Understand

My students need real historical objects they can hold, touch, and use, not just pictures and papers: such as a quill, holding a rail spike, or examining an arrowhead.

My Students

Stories, simulations, coloring, technology...but where are the toys? Children need to role play and have natural conversations with their friends and teacher. Artifacts can do this. We need excitement of actually touching an object, imagining what it is, who used it, and where it came from.

My school is a family.

6th-8th graders come from over eight elementary schools and develop into a family that will support them throughout high school. During the last years we have experienced exponential growth in diversity. Many of the traditional conversations and unique American past is more difficult to grasp, literally! As 6th graders, the children are ready to leave some aspects of elementary school. Yet, they still love to color, play games, give hugs, and sing. I have noticed that the science classes use stations a lot of the time to perform labs. Why can’t we do this in history class?

My Project

My vision is to actively involve the students with artifacts for each unit for the year: Discovery, Native Americans, Colonies, Revolution, Westward Expansion and Reform, and the Civil War. I intend to use technology to create replicas of primary documents, art, and political cartoons, but many of the objects are hard to afford or come by. I would like to have six to eight stations where groups of three can examine one to two objects and analyze them for hints, uses, and needs, all of which are important historical analysis skills. For some of the objects, they can actually use them. We remember things better when we hold them and imagine. I want the students to use the station’s objects such as quill pens, railroad spikes, arrowheads to create stories, skits, and videos, using some of the artifacts as props. Excitement comes when other groups present, or share, or even laugh. What are they doing over there? What is that? Will I get to see it?. Bringing imagination and excitement into the lessons is the main goal.

My students will now explore their own history at home, asking mom and dad about past and future trips, objects they have stored up in their attic, and will bring in their own artifacts from trips.

History is part of our daily story, and although reading and math are vital to learning, history involves the art of using those skills each day. This draws the children into their family and further into their community and country.
