Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Creativity, collaboration, communication, persistence, and problem solving. These are skills my students will practice as they are introduced and continue to learn about coding. Coding is about problem solving and thinking. I want students to be able to think critically and creatively.

Our school is high poverty.

As teachers we work to challenge, stimulate, and foster learning through our lessons. The students are excited to learn new ideas, and thrive on new challenges. However, the students in our school have little if no experience with coding and programming, which helps them understand digital language in the modern world. It is another avenue to help students connect with technology and how computers work. Most students think people just download an app or type something in. I love when a student says, "It won't let me . . . " like the computer is smarter than they are. An introduction to coding would help students see that they are telling the robot (or computer) what to do. Someone designed that app or program, not the computer.

My Project

Students can improve their logical thinking skills. Coding involves using algorithms, which are instructions based on sequences, repetitions and conditions. Students plan, compute, analyze, and execute the program they create for their Ozobot. Students work with variables and build on math, science, and technology skills. Students will learn basic coding using a color based coding language. They will use creative drawing, problem solving, and cooperative group skills to plan and explore coding. STEM and computer science can be extended though digital apps. There are many free downloads, lessons, and extensions to continue learning with the Ozobots.

Ozobots will help students connect with digital language and thinking.

Students will be able to work creatively and critically as they design using the color coded language. This will provide a springboard to more coding opportunities. In addition, students will strengthen their math and science process skills. Students learn code language, robotic behavior, and deductive reasoning. They think logically, creatively, and strategically. Ozobots are a fun and engaging introduction.
