Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our class motto is: "Work Hard. Get Smarter. Change the World!" We are a community of scholars working every day to grow academically and socially while we learn English. Our class is a supportive environment where everyone is encouraged and expected to put in 100% effort 100% of the time.
The majority of my students have emigrated from the Dominican Republic, and have been in the United States between 3 months to 3 years.
Transitioning to a new country, a new school, and a new way of life is very daunting - but they are extremely resilient and hardworking! We work hard in our class because it is essential that my students develop their social and academic English language skills as quickly as possible.
My Project
My students have many different learning styles and are at many different levels of English proficiency. For all my students, learning to read in English is difficult. As a result, some get discouraged and it is difficult to develop their love of reading. This interactive library will provide a new and exciting way for students to read and enjoy books. Struggling readers will be able to use the Leap Frog Tag Readers and books to practice phonics and increase their reading levels while more advanced readers will be able to use the books paired with an audio CD to read books that are of high interest to them but may have been too overwhelming to read alone. I know that this interactive library will increase student motivation and student reading levels exponentially.
It is essential that my students have a strong foundation in and love of reading.
This will help them become proficient in academic English. Being proficient in English will allow them to be successful in the classroom through earning good grades and high test scores. Good grades and high scores will increase my students' abilities to graduate high school, get to and through college, and have increased career and life choices.
