Inquiry Activities for Chemistry Class

My students need inquiry-based activities to start the new school year.

FULLY FUNDED! Dr. Falin's classroom raised $443

My Students

Help us continue our move toward a more collaborative inquiry-based classroom! The kids love to learn this way. Hands-on means minds-on. We need some more activities that our students can do so that they can experience science as it should be - by doing it.

I teach high school chemistry, physics and AP chemistry in a rural Appalachian county.

Our high school has about 300 students and serves the entire county. Most of our 11th graders take chemistry. We have a high rate of poverty, but our school has consistently met AYP over the last six years. Technology gives access to a world of information and people for our students and we want our students to leave high school with the 21st Century skills that will allow them to compete in high school and the workforce.

My Project

I moved to a more collaborative inquiry- and project-based teaching method two years ago. It has been very successful. Hands-on really leads to minds-on. Students are more engaged and connecting what they're learning with the real world. However, building a set of quality inquiry-activities takes time and money. These resources will help me in building those resources for my chemistry classes. I've chosen two inquiry kits that will impact our classes early in the school year. The first will fit into our first unit where we learn about the properties of matter. This kit will guide them through the study of matter, intensive and extensive properties and chemical and physical changes. All these are important concepts in building a foundation for the study of chemistry. From there we will study the periodic table and periodic law. Here they will perform small scale experiments and from their results learn why the periodic table is arranged the way that it is.

Your donations will really impact the education of my students.

These resources will be used and appreciated and I believe inspire them to move on to higher science classes, like my AP chemistry class or physics class, or one of the other science courses offered to them at the school or virtually. We so need to encourage students to enter the science and technology fields - and you can help us do that. Thank you for your consideration!
