Innovative Classroom Design for 21st Century Learners

My students need 2 high-top tables with stools, 2 saucer chairs, a rug, and a set of eight lap desks to help us design our innovative classroom.

My Students

When you walk into our classroom, you will see students designing bridges, roller coasters and catapults. You will see them creating inventions that solve real world problems. You will see students using technology to find answers for their wonders and tweeting about their new learning.

My students are active, inquiring learners.

They love to ask questions and construct their own learning. They use technology as a tool to research, collaborate and create. They are members of a small community school, and in the upper grades, they are part of the only class of their grade level.

My Project

As I began to incorporate more educational technology and project based learning, I started noticing that our room design didn’t match the work that my students were doing. They were collaborating, designing creatively and problem-solving. No longer was I the source of the information that they needed. Instead, as they inquired, they developed the skills they needed to go out and find their own answers. As the students worked through these processes, we found that the desks were in the way. Students were asking to move to the floor to spread out their materials and have a more comfortable work space. Some students even wanted to stand as they problem solved. The high top tables, saucers, rugs and lap desks that we are requesting will allow us to build an innovative classroom environment.

These alternative seating solutions will inspire students to be creative problem solvers.

There will be just a few desks for students who still desire that traditional work space, but our room will be made up of creative learning zones. Some students may be working on the floor, some standing and some gathered in some soft seating. The classroom will belong to the students, and they will decide how to use it best.
