My students need 1 set of headphones and 1 junction box for an independent station where they can watch lessons that will impact their learning in a non-traditional tech-based way.
Two days a week, tutors work with small, student-led groups. Our class currently has 4 tutorial groups each hour but only three tutors. These materials provide an independent tutorial group where students will continue their learning and learn to work independently and with their group.
Many of the students in the AVID program will be the first in their family to attend college.
Some are new-comers to the United States. Some receive free and reduced lunch. Many are minorities.
All of them are driven to make a better life for themselves. They strive to get good grades, go to college, and have numerous career opportunities.
The students have written letters to admissions offices of colleges and universities from the United States and Europe. We have toured one campus this year and will be visiting two more.
The AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program builds students who realize the dream of college is attainable.
We work in collaborative groups guided by learning and desire. We write. We question. We advocate. We celebrate. We tutor.
My Project
I am requesting 1 set of headphones and 1 junction box for an independent station where they can watch lessons that will impact their learning in a non-traditional tech-based way.
The AVID students will rotate through working with different tutors. On one tutorial day every two weeks, each group will work independently on a topic related to tutorials or inquiry skills. I will create a new lesson every two weeks for this station of learning. Generally, this station will have a short taped or screencast lesson that students will watch with a laptop connected to a TV in my room. After that, there will be an activity to do. Then there will be a reflection activity that goes with the learning.
Other times, the students may be listening to a podcast of something related to our tutorial sessions. Or they may be listening in on a tutorial from another school to see what other AVID students are doing.
This project will provide students with the tools they need to work independently and still have learning happening.
This blended-flip model of instruction is something they will see in the future.
In addition, this project will allow me to spend more time coaching with the tutors and students to make sure that the tutorials are going the way they should and students are learning the skills they will use in high school, college and beyond.
