Increase Learning Opportunities For Special Students!
My students need a rug, sensory materials, games, engaging hands-on instructional materials, and materials that improve functional academic skills to increase their independence.
I have a very diverse and busy group of students. All of them are funny, sweet, silly, and curious. Some of my students are nonverbal and extremely active, while others are quite articulate and calm. All of my students have disabilities and all of them deserve to have new, fun, engaging materials.
I have a self-contained special education class in a middle school.
Most of the students who attend our school live in families who experience poverty, including the students in my classroom. Because of this, experiences with new and engaging instructional or play materials are often scarce for our students. Many of the general education students who come in my classroom to volunteer and act as peer mentors comment about how the materials in our classroom are like nothing they've ever seen (especially sensory stimulating visual materials). The students in my class and in the larger school community are like students everywhere; filled with curiosity, wanting to learn and be successful, and hungry for new experiences.
My Project
The new rug, ball, and disc will be incredible additions to our classroom environment and improve the comfort levels for many of my students, helping them to be ready to learn each day. My students are very curious about the world they live in, so the hand-on science activities, ant farm, and United States puzzles will help increase their knowledge, while keeping them engaged in learning. The listening station will allow a small group of students to listen and follow along to books on CD, improving their reading skills and focus. Many of my students need functional academic skills to improve their independence in the community, and the different sets of flashcards, math and writing materials, will improve these skills.
Working with students with severe and multiple disabilities is simultaneously rewarding and challenging.
Each of my students has unique needs and ways of learning, which necessitate individualized educational planning and a constant influx of new and engaging instructional materials. A yearly classroom budget of just $100 does not allow me to meet the educational needs of my students. These materials would help me to create an exciting and engaging classroom environment, ripe for learning!
