Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are wonderful 1st graders who are eager to learn and put forth great effort in class with the materials we currently have. I work with a large culturally and linguistically diverse group of learners. Many of our students are English Learners and many students receive free lunch.
Studies in teaching techniques have just begun to pick up the fact that one-size-fits-all lesson plans are far less effective than ones that cater to specific learning styles.
From visual thinkers to tactile learners, to listeners and readers, kids pick up information much faster when using their own special methods. Arts programs are being cut in schools, supplies limited, and salaries frozen. Due to this and the fact that my students are high-poverty, their need for new technology is very strong, yet unfulfilled. Adding iPad minis to my art program would give them more exciting learning opportunities! With the iPad minis, my students will gain a better understanding of math, language arts, and science concepts by integrating them all into my lessons. My students are technology-driven and many don't have computers at home. These resources will help guide my students as they become independent learners, making judgments, providing arguments, and learning to provide evidence.
My Project
One of the great uses for iPad minis in our classroom is the combination of art and literacy. Several apps allow students to use their own art or photos as inspiration for writing. This can be a few simple words added to images or poems or even digital storytelling. Photo-manipulation, animation, collage, art history, art and math are all provided through amazing apps. Stop-motion and time lapse films can be created. The Brushes app provides technology in painting and drawing skills. Students become active participants in the creative process of learning. The possibilities are endless with new apps being developed all the time. They will have an opportunity to collaborate, share their creations with their peers, and critique each other's work.
Please help my students learn and appreciate art.
With the help of the Lily Sarah Grace fund and other generous donors, my students will develop a love for art and these worthwhile art experiences will provide them with opportunities to create new ideas or projects. The iPad minis are wonderful tools for collaboration in cross-curricular subjects.
