In-Class Library Needs Shelving

My students need additional storage in the classroom to help organize and maintain texts and a classroom library they have worked to create.

My Students

The students that enter my classroom are hungry to learn new information. They are avid readers & have taken ownership of our classroom library. Their goal is to create an organized system so each student who enters my room can enjoy a wide selection of organized literature.

The students that enter my classroom are excited for life.

If I let them, we would book discussions all hour & I am loving the experience. The students take ownership of the projects they take on & believe strongly in helping to make a difference. They feel that all students should have access to fun & interesting reading material & this is why they have latched on to the idea of organizing the classroom library. They are creative & jump at the opportunity alter obstacles into manageable tasks.

My Project

The students have taken a strong ownership of my classroom library - from helping to alphabetize novels to helping to create a check-out system that fits the needs of our room. One of the largest frustrations that they face is the lack of shelving. There are several large bookcases in the classroom but the shelving is bent & difficult to adjust, which creates large amounts of wasted space. With larger class sizes, the students hope to organize the library, cut back on wasted space, & open the classroom to allow for more movement. Throughout the process of collecting books & organizing the library, students will maintain a sense of ownership of their space & take an active role in deciding what to read instead of waiting for their instructors to force them to read.

There will be less clutter, more open space, & increased pride in what they have accomplished.

With bigger class sizes, each wasted inch of classroom space is felt. My students love to move around & demonstrate what they learn. Reducing inadequate shelving with efficient alternatives would be one way to allow them that freedom.
