"Ah, music! A magic beyond all!"- J.K. Rowling - Harry Potter.
Music is magical for me and my students; each day students come to my room to learn about and create music. Music comes alive for students when they connect the music curriculum to their learning and experiences outside music.
I teach approximately 700 students, K-5, in a school filled with supportive staff, amazing community members, and students who will grow up to be the next leaders in all industries.
My students are 21st century learners who are ready to problem solve and are creative in how they are learning in all areas of their education.
I see each student once a week for 45 minutes. By the time the students have reached 5th grade, they understand the basic concepts of music - Rhythm, Pitch, Melody, Harmony, Form, Timbre, and Expression. In theory, the students understand how they are related to each other, but in practice, this concept is often under-realized. When students are asked to analyze or compose a piece of music, they tend to concentrate on one aspect of music alone. In addition, because of the lack of musical technical skills, previous attempts at creating are watered down; therefore students are not as engaged as they could be.
My Project
The use of ipads in the music classroom will bring 21st century learning into my classroom, allow students to create music in ways that would not otherwise be possible, and provide customized learning opportunities for each student. I plan to build an pad cart, one (or two!) ipads at a time.
Students will use the ipads to practice skills, make comparisons, and create amazing musical works that would not otherwise be possible. Elementary age students do not have the technical skills on instruments to create music that matches the ability level they are ready to listen to and study. When it comes to performing higher-level activities in the music class, we are restricted by their natural development. iPads will allow us to bridge this gap and students will be able to use apps such as GarageBand to create intricate musical pieces that students can relate to.
iPads will allow students to create music and make connections between music concepts that would not be possible without technology.
Currently, students who finish work in my classroom have to wait around till the rest of the class finishes. With the iPads, I will be able to create customized learning opportunities for my advanced students. In addition, I will be able to provide alternative activities for my students who need more support.
