This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I'm a school nurse in the Dallas area. We have 675 students - Pre-K through 5th grade. We have a very busy clinic. I see approximately 30 -50 students a day. So we go through a lot of ice packs for headaches and injuries. We have a great group of very active kids.

Our school is predominantly a Hispanic population.

The demographic area is considered in the highest poverty level. As said before the students are great, active and eager to learn. And they are great, active and eager to play, which results in some injuries.

My Project

Due to the amount of clinic traffic, having a new ice maker will be a time saver, allowing student's to get back to class quicker. I will not have to go to the cafeteria to get ice every morning and sometimes afternoon, depending on the day's events. The cafeteria is located on the back of the school and the clinic is located on the front of the school. I bring ice to the clinic every morning. Sometimes before I can make that trip, someone has tripped and is in need of and ice pack. As a nurse, we see more complex cases each year. But we also see our share of bumps, bruises and scrapes. And band aids and ice packs are magic to making a kid smile again. But we also use ice with more serious injuries such as pos. broken bones and head injuries. So I do not wish to make light of how important this may be.

This project will help with their education by reducing the amount of time they may spend in the clinic and out of the classroom.

As I said, an ice pack and band aids have magic healing properties that help sooth the wounds of and active childhood. This project will help the nurse with clinic management, reducing the amount of trips out of the clinic for ice. The ice maker we have Is not working any more. It basically serves as a storage container. There are no funds to replace it.
