I Will Read and I Will Lead!

My students need visual and fun ways to learn and practice the English language. Games will increase their desire to practice, rather than shy away from English! And an Easi-Speak Recording Microphone will help them hear themselves better as they learn to speak English.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This year, my classes consist of many Limited English Proficient students. This group had a moderate 64% pass rate on the STAAR test and continue to struggle with English. My goal is to have each student progress 2.0 grade levels in English by the end of the year!

I work for a district that services a 98.9% Hispanic population with approximately 84% of students economically disadvantaged.

I teach ELAR to 5th graders. Many students consistently struggle with the English language and lack intrinsic motivation to try their best. They are easily discouraged when they make common English errors. In addition, it is challenging to find material that has interesting topics for this age yet with a low readability level. For instance, if they check out English books at the 1st/2nd grade reading level, they are too "babyish" for them. After purchasing some vocabulary games last year, I found their enthusiasm rising! They challenged each other to games! I would hear them encourage their partners! The ultimate response was when they started using some of those vocabulary words in their writing! I hope to see that excitement for the English language soar with this new group of students I have this year!

My Project

Most of the materials I have chosen are games. I have discovered the wonder of games in the ELAR classroom! I will use these games during class and tutoring. I also envision these games being used as a reward for effort in the classroom, perhaps when fluency levels begin to rise closer to a 5th grade level. I have also selected materials that will enhance their reading comprehension. The mystery inference cards will encourage use and practice of their inference skills without them realizing they are working on comprehension! One last note for excitement and enthusiasm. Last year I used a speaker system in my class for a hearing impaired student. All students seemed to grow 2 feet when they would present using the speaker and they could hear their voice on the system! I also asked for a microphone so they could hear themselves when they speak (or read) in front of their group or class! My students will learn the value and pride of using the English language correctly!

Who is to say how young lives can be affected by learning to read?

I believe that when these students learn to read and write effectively, they will literally have new worlds opened for them! And an even bigger reward...they will automatically take that knowledge and literacy home and siblings will soon follow!
