My Students

When I moved into my classroom there was a sign in the room that said "World's Best Class." Daily, my students exemplify the words on the sign as they learn, work, play and prove that they truly are the world's best class.

I teach the "World's Best Class!" I have 9 kindergarteners and 6 first graders in the "World's Best Place"- Alaska!

I have varying levels of academic ability in all subject areas. There are students in Title 1 services, English Language Learners, and Special Education services. My school is K-6 and is in a very close, supportive community. My students and I are ready to read!

My Project

The iRead program allows students to practice reading in a technologically savvy way. In the technological society we live in, students have to know how to meaningfully incorporate technology into their lives. Students will be given the opportunity to use iPad minis each day to help them become better readers. But how will it work? Each day, students scan a QR code on the cover of their leveled reader. The iPad will then play a recording of the story. Students follow along with the book. After listening to the story, students read the story and record themselves reading. The magic happens when students listen to their readings, with proof that they can read! Hearing a story and becoming aware of vocabulary helps students read fluently, and build confidence as readers! Learning to read can be hard. The technology component of the iRead program provides a nice incentive for some students to read. Students love having a gadget in their hands! It almost doesn't feel like reading!

I have watched this program work miracles in students' lives.

I have students who were completely uninterested in reading beam as they listened to themselves read a passage that seemed impossible. I have witnessed students realize their own capabilities as readers through this simple technology. I would love to allow my students the opportunity to have the same success in their reading, but lack the technology which is so enticing for many students. The "World's Best Class" needs iPad minis!
