I Can Read Nonfiction!

My students need high-interest, short, nonfiction texts to help transition their new skills from our dyslexia program into their independent reading.

This project is fully funded

My Students

Winston Churchill, Tom Cruise, and George Patton--what do they all have in common? They're dyslexic! And they struggled in school. Just imagine that kind of intelligence and talent was masked by not being able to read.

The Dyslexic students are just like these famous folks.

We are smart, motivated, creative, fabulous kids--who can't read very well...yet. We work hard every day to learn the skills we need to sound out and spell words. In time, we'll learn to express ourselves and enjoy the world of literature without stumbling over words. Every day, we incorporate new sounds and coding strategies. And, in class, we can code lots of words. Our next step is to transition our skills into reading books, magazines, and environmental texts. While our classroom teachers have books, they're not necessarily on our reading levels. And some teachers want their books to stay in their rooms. Having magazines and nonfiction texts on all of our levels in our dyslexia classroom will allow us to explore reading with the support of our dyslexia teacher as soon as we're ready after each lesson.

My Project

Subscriptions to Time For Kids will give us access to the world's current events on reading levels we can read and understand. We will be informed about the world around us, working on comprehension, and using our coding skills in real-world texts. This reading will open up the world to us in ways we haven't had before. As we grow as readers, we can move into higher levels, all the while practicing the life-long reading skills we are learning. And, our nonfiction books will help us prepare for state testing, introduce us to new ideas, and maybe even inspire us to become the next Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, or Albert Einstein! They were dyslexic, too!

My students are some of the smartest, most hard-working kids you'll find.

They are overcoming difficulties every day. Please help me help them to become strong readers in all formats. Help me to encourage them to read like grown ups read, to learn from their reading, to find their passions, to realize that they can achieve and reach any goals they strive for. Nonfiction texts that aren't intimidating are a great place to start. They can read that! Help me show them! Thank you!
