Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Reading is so boring!" and "I don't like to read!" these are some things I'm hearing my lower readers say each day, but it isn't true! They do like reading, they are just bored of reading the same few books my classroom has at the lower levels.
My students are very curious kids and are voracious readers at heart!
This school year I have a high concentration of learners with special needs who are reading far below the grade level target. There are also other who are growing up with limited access to books at home and are also reading far below the grade level target. They can tell me about things they'd like to read about, however I only have access to the same books they struggled to read in First Grade.
All of these books are older than the students and some are older than me! My lower readers deserve engaging books they love that will foster their love of reading and help them excel this school year!
My Project
My students read for 40 to 60 minutes in class each day while I teach small reading groups which they rotate through. They will read these books and listen to the books on CD. They've asked if I have any more mystery books, dinosaur books, or any books about animals at their levels. I don't yet, but if this project is funded I will!
We need more fiction and non-fiction books at the lower reading levels including high interest books, nonfiction books, and several sets of books with a CD for listening. These new books they haven't read yet will be a great motivator for them to be excited to read something new, build their vocabularies, strengthen their comprehension, and move up in their reading level up to grade level and beyond!
Any donation you can give to this project will help us on our journey to push all learners to be great this year!
I'd love to give my kids the chance to be successful in school, love reading, and begin to open doors to future opportunities which could quickly become out of reach as they move up to third grade and beyond. My disadvantaged students and learners with special needs can also excel with the right materials. Hopefully you can help us to get those materials in their little hands!
