Hunger Games Compare and Contrast Project

My students need 20 sets of the Hunger Games Trilogy. We will study the set throughout the year, comparing and contrasting the movies.

My Students

These books would help us with Project Based Learning that students would be excited about and it would make them feel like the work they are doing is meaningful and relevant, as well. The students are excited about the idea of comparing and contrasting the Hunger Games movies with the books.

I teach ELA in a 7th grade self-contained special education classroom of 16 students.

We are in a 90% poverty school district and funds for limited. 7th grade is going on a field trip to see the final movie in the Hunger Games Series and I would love to use this opportunity to engage my students. These students have various learning difficulties that often make reading and especially literature very difficult and often boring. The students are very excited about the idea of taking on this very challenging project.

My Project

We will do a project where we read each Hunger Games book as a class and answer comprehension questions. We will do this orally as a class. The students will keep a log of all the characters and important information given in the novel. I have found worksheets for these projects already. The students will work in small groups and then discuss as a class. At the conclusion of each book we will watch the corresponding movie and create a compare and contrast project. The students will have several choices in the way in which to present their projects.

Due to the nature of my class, we don't often get to participate in the projects in the general education environment.

We use a computerized reading program that helps close the gaps in reading level. However, they complain that it is boring and they want to do what the "rest of 7th grade is doing." I try to do this whenever possible but it is often difficult. This opportunity will help engage the students who are going the see the movie as a grade.
