Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students at BB High School complete 3-4 years of social studies during their tenure in school. This gives students the opportunity to have a more enriched historical experience and appreciate the historical significance of the people, places, and events that have shaped their lives.
Our high school is a small school made up of about 500 students.
These students come from a variety of cultural backgrounds and a vast majority, over 60%, speak a language other than English at home. In addition to being multicultural, our students face economic difficulties as over 80% qualify for our free or reduced price lunch program.
Despite these difficulties, our students have positive mental attitudes and contribute in a myriad of ways to the school and the community. Students in our school strive not only academically but also through after school clubs, sports, and volunteer opportunities. They have taken their parents' and community members' hard working attributes to our school and it shows through our successes. Our students are encouraged to seek experiences outside of the classroom and are actively fundraising for a trip to Boston of which they will need some assistance.
My Project
BB High School students have explored American history in Washington D.C. and Philadelphia in successive school years. This year they are traveling to the city of Boston to focus on the founding of our nation by taking a walking tour in which they’ll experience the Back Bay, Boston Common, Beacon Hill, Newbury Street, Copley Square, Trinity Church and Faneuil Hall.
Students will also enjoy a guided sightseeing tour of the Freedom Trail including the final resting place of notable Americans such as John Hancock and Crispus Attucks as well as Paul Revere’s house. Students will visit the U.S.S. Constitution and the Bunker Hill Monument and places in the city of Boston where major events occurred such as the first reading of the Declaration of Independence to the citizens of Boston. Harvard Square, the JFK Library and Museum, and many other sites will be visited by the students during their time in Boston. My students need this trip to Boston to continue to grow and contribute to the greater community.
By showing our students that their capabilities are not limited by our resources but by their own minds, we empower our students to reach for their goals, have new experiences, and create a new sense of self by achieving personal and academic achievements through travel and studies and the diligence it takes to be successful in those pursuits.
My students need this trip to Boston to continue to grow and contribute to the greater community.
