I work with ESOL students in grades K-6. I work hard to help instill a love of reading in my students. Older students who are reading below grade level need extra encouragement to develop this love of reading.
My students come from a wide variety of backgrounds.
Some are born overseas, and are learning English for the first time, others are born in the US, but speak another language at home. Many of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch. As my students get older they want to be reading materials that look like what their native english peers are reading. This can be difficult for students who are reading below grade level.
My Project
I am requesting the American Chillers book series. These books are high interest chapter books. The text is written at a low reading level. This will allow my ESOL students in the upper grades to read a chapter book along with their peers. Some of my students are intimidated by the amount of text found in typical chapter books. For these students the graphic novels will allow them to read books that they do not feel are "baby books", but have a limited amount of text on each page. The graphic novel books I am requesting are from the Lunch Lady, Squish, Boxcar Children, and Magic Pickle series. The Fly Guy books are intended for younger students as a high interest series to help keep them excited about reading.
Providing my students with high interest books that are at their reading levels will help them to continue to develop a love of reading that will last them through elementary school and into adulthood.
