My Students

My students are creative and thirsty for new ways to monitor, explore, and express their learning. They are rich in creativity, but lack the technology they would like to explore.

Our school is a Title 1, PK-12, charter school.

We serve students from a 30 mile radius, in a large city. Many of our students did not do well in a regular public school, and need extra support and intervention. Our school directly mirrors the socio-economic and racial subgroups of the surrounding areas. Our school is a Marzano High Reliability school, and believes in putting learning first. Our classes are capped at 18, in each grade level. We use looping in elementary, so that students can have two years with each teacher. Instead of grades, we use standards-based grading and proficiency scales. We believe in intentional vocabulary instruction, students being responsible for their own learning, and promoting creativity and inquiry in our students.

My Project

The iPod will be used for multiple tasks and subjects. Students will record themselves reading, and track their own fluency and reading behaviors. They will use it to record videos or to take photos, for cross-curricular projects. Students who struggle with writing, will record themselves brainstorming, and be able to play it back when putting the words down on paper. They will also be able to read their finished draft and listen to it, enabling them to revise their work more effectively. Students will be able to use various apps to support their learning, in every subject area.

Our students are very creative and driven.

They like to push themselves, and try new things. Having the technology available for them to experiment with new media, will help them to take risks with new media, new techniques, and self-evaluation.
