Many high school students today have classes that are 90 minutes long. For the students dealing with ADD or ADHD, this can be a real challenge. I hope that using these stability balls as seats will help them remain focused.
My students are a mix of 10th, 11th and 12th graders in Geometry, Algebra 2 and Algebra 2 Honors.
Our public school is in a small town in South Carolina. Their ability levels vary greatly but difficulty focusing covers all students. Many of the students in my last class, a non-honors Algebra 2 class, have told me that their ADD medicine runs out by class time and we have seen that in action. They have trouble staying focused and thus distract other students. I believe that they want to do better and that this project will help them to do that.
My Project
I have requested 5 of the 65 cm stability balls for some of my students to use as seats. After reading many anecdotal accounts of the benefits these provide for those who have trouble focusing in class, I decided that it was something that would benefit my class. When those students are more focused and thus causing less classroom distractions, the other students will be able to remain more focused as well.
I have found that students can understand difficult concepts much more easily if they can focus on the task at hand.
In this day of constantly changing stimuli, this focus can be even more difficult to obtain. Changing from chairs to stability ball is a small thing that will hopefully make a big difference. The health benefits of strengthening the core will just be icing on the cake. I am very interested in the effect they will have on my students. Please consider donating. Thanks!
