Helping Special Education Students Help Themelves!

My Students

Have you ever had a time in your life when you felt like everyone was talking about you and no one was talking to you? A lot of special education students feel this way more often than anyone should ever have to.

My students are amazing young people.

They attend a public school in Oklahoma and for various reasons receive special educations services. They are some of the bravest people I have ever met and I feel deeply grateful that I get to help them pave their way into young adulthood.

My Project

Students who receive special education services are required by federal law to have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), which must include a plan of transition into life after high school. The thing that most of these students don't get is the training and guidance to learn how to go after their goals. With this iPad I will be able to allow students to take an active role in creating, authoring and presenting their IEPs and transition goals. When students are a part of academic and other area goals for their lives, they will want to work harder toward meeting those goals.

Being able to foster self advocacy, self determination and transition skills will lend itself to giving students so much more than just an education.

This iPad will help make it possible for many more students to be INVOLVED in their own educations and lives!
