My Students

"If you don't love to read, you just haven't found the right book yet." ~John Green, Author. As you may already know, studies show that the more students read, the better they do in school. My students love to read and need a literacy-rich environment to help them grow as learners.

I work in a neighborhood school within the Madison Metropolitan School district.

We have a diverse group of learners from all walks of life. Not only do we have an ethnically diverse school population, we also have a large number of students who come from economically challenged households. Several students do not have access to grade level texts at home. Therefore, I want my classroom library to be a place where they can find any book that will get them excited about reading and learning.

My Project

Similar to many schools around the country, our staff had been rummaging through broken down furniture to create productive learning spaces for our students. My hope is that I can use these bookshelves to create an organized, inviting space for students to find and read all types of books. With a new library organization system, new books can be displayed easily and books can be organized in several ways to promote different units of study, genres, or even various levels of text difficulty. Additionally, I plan to use our classroom library as a way for students to create their own space in their way; giving them the opportunity to choose the layout and inventory of reading materials. Within the bookshelves, there will be several bins dedicated to different genres and topics, as well as sections designated to highlighting authors and exciting series.

If children that read more end up achieving more, then the classroom library should be regarded as a teacher's greatest tool.

Making reading convenient to all students will help them find a love for reading, but they have to LIKE what they read. If they are not interested in the books provided for them for their independent reading time, then the time is wasted "pretending" to read. By giving students easy access to engaging texts, you are giving them a tools to last a lifetime.
