Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A big part of being a teacher for me is to instill the love of learning in my students. In 1st grade, a major part of our learning is teaching my students how to read. Everyone learns this at a different pace, so a leveled library is a must to help my students feel confident in their reading skills.
My students are low-income English learners at a high-needs, Title 1 school who enjoy school, but struggle with reading and math.
Often times, many students are reading one to two years below grade level and struggle to become fluent readers and speakers of English. These students receive limited help at home due to language barriers and socioeconomic pressures.
My Project
As mentioned before, learning how to read is a big part of first grade. Many students come in at the beginning of the year with only their letters and sounds, and leave first grade a reader, often able to read a whole picture book by themselves! This is a crucial year in reading instruction and it is very important to keep the kids engaged in reading, and come to love it.
Many times, children will be discouraged and turn away from reading if they often find themselves having lots of difficulty with the books they choose. It lowers their self-confidence in their reading skills, often leading them to hate reading. A leveled library will allow students to be able to choose high-interest books that are at their level of reading. It will also help my students build confidence in their reading skills as they watch themselves advance through the levels.
This is my first year at this school.
My new classroom has no classroom library. I brought books from my previous teaching experience but most of them are above grade level (2nd grade), not leveled, and are currently above the reading levels of my current students. Sets of leveled books will help me create a leveled library and allow all my students to have equitable access to books they can read.
