My Students

A typical day in my math class, begins with a whole group mini lesson. After the concept is taught or reviewed, students begin their independent work, where they get to choose the current concept-focused center/station to work at. Meanwhile, I am differentiating the concept to a small group.

My kindergarten students are the best!

They come from all over the city, and from different socio-economic backgrounds. My school is multi-cultural. My students range from being in school since the age of 2, to never having a formal education setting until they come to kindergarten. Because of this vast range, I attempt to teach in different aspect with different materials to reach all of my students. Some learn best from demonstration, while others learn best from hands on experiences.

My Project

Since I like to make my approach to teaching math as hands-on as possible, I want my students to have many different mediums to use during math. Some of my students who struggle with math, also struggle with fine motor skills. I want to be able to have every learner feel successful, regardless of the path they take to learn a new concept. By having the different materials, my students will learn the different ways they can manipulate materials to represent numbers, groupings, and help them learn number recognition. I feel my students will be able to use the dough and sand to help them visualize numbers and objects, more than just using a paper and pencil will. It will also help them to understand that using creative materials can be utilized in every aspect of their school day!

This donation will help improve my classroom by helping my students who need a creative outlet to help them with our mathematical tasks.

I hope it will change their student's lives by showing them there's not one right way to find an answer. Some answers are best found being creative and using artistic materials!
