My Students

"A book is a gift you can open again and again." - Garrison Keillor. Early literacy skills are key to helping students explore all facets of life. As my students' reading and writing skills improve, their curiosity grows as well. In order to continue this, we need more books and notebooks!

I am a Special Education teacher at a low-income primary school located on the south side of Chicago.

We serve 577 students in Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade. The majority of students are African-American and 96% come from low-income households. I am lucky to teach 18 bright young minds. Each has unique learning needs, and it has been a joy to see them grow academically and developmentally over the past year. They are enthusiastic learners and creative thinkers. They inspire me every day!

My Project

With these books, students will be able to practice their reading skills while exploring the world around them (non-fiction) and others' imaginative ones (fiction). They will use the notebooks to become authors themselves, as we will use these to work on writing skills. The notebooks will also serve as journals, which will particularly benefit my students' social-emotional needs.

This project will boost students' independence and confidence in the classroom.

Above all, this project will build students' literacy skills, which are essential for all academic areas. They will be so excited to have new books to read and notebooks to share their writing. Your support will help my students become lifelong learners!
