Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Everything would be awesome if we could add Lego Education to our special education classroom! I previously worked at a school that had Lego Education materials, but unfortunately my new school with equally amazing and talented students does not have enough funds to purchase these materials.

I will have a new group of curious and active diverse learners for the upcoming school year.

I am moving from teaching 2nd grade to 3rd-5th grade, in a self-contained, special education setting. My students are 1-3 years behind in reading and math. Additionally, my students come from low income families with limited resources. Due to significant budget cuts in our school district there are not funds available at my school to provide my students with all the resources they deserve. My students love to learn through hands-on lessons that provide them opportunities to take ownership for their learning. My students need increased exposure to cross-curricular activities in order to foster creativity, build problem-solving skills and increase overall academic performance. They also need increased access to technology and computer programming. I am continually looking for ways to provide my students with increased access to project-based learning lessons in order to build these skills.

My Project

Lego WeDo kits will allow students to connect learning from multiple subject areas in one project. WeDo is a learning solution that brings together technology, science, math and reading skills through hands-on, project based learning. The Lego WeDo kits allow students to build movable lego models, either by following step-by-step instructions to create a specific model or they can use their own imaginations to create something new. Students then connect their Lego models up to the computer and are able to use an icon-based computer programming software to tell their model how to move. Additionally, this project will allow for increased collaboration among my students as these will be shared materials they will use with a partner. Due to the fact that I teach in a special education setting, our group is always small and it is hard to give my students opportunities for collaboration where they are able to stay engaged and really get the full benefits of collaboration and teamwork.

My students love using Legos and have never been exposed to anything like this!

I know that this will be the most popular activity in my classroom this school year. I look forward to the level of engagement and interest this project will bring my students.
