When you were in elementary school, did teachers say to students, "Sit down and stop fidgeting so you can pay attention!"? I refuse to tell my students that! Fidgeting helps many students pay attention.
I teach in an elementary school, however I have different students for each subject I teach.
Many of my students have ADD or ADHD. This makes sitting still a difficult task for them, which then interferes with their learning. Allowing these students to fidget gives them the ability to reach their full potential in the classroom.
My Project
Studies have proved that allowing students with ADHD to sit on yoga ball chairs improves their ability to focus and complete their work. Having the ability to move around more while sitting makes students with ADD and ADHD more attentive. Twenty-five minutes of recess time isn't enough. Movement is necessary for the child's sensory system which is still developing. Being in motion keeps them engaged.
Having yoga ball chairs as an option will help my ADD and ADHD students.
Their need to fidget will be allowed and not be a distraction. My students will be given the opportunity to reach their full potential.
