My students need AP Biology Labs as we are starting our fourth AP course. These kits are chosen to exceed the requirement for lab hours by the College Board.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We've managed to slowly build our science program here so that we can now offer an AP Biology course. We expect our students to attend college and this course will help them do WELL once there. The kits you are funding will provide students the inquiry and lab science opportunities they need.
These students are rising Juniors.
About 130 of them in total, this course will be one to two sections of those students. Our school has over 80% of the population qualify for free and reduced lunch, and is over 95% African American.
Our school is built on two premises. We keep students safe and we will get them into college. We do both, exceedingly well.
Our students are involved and buy into the culture we set. They have a voice here. They wanted an AP science class, and we responded.
My Project
Students must do a series of Labs to qualify for AP Biology, which these labs will help us meet. But, more importantly, these labs will give our students the chance to do college level work, in a high school classroom.
They will use these projects from September to April, so your support will be felt for the entire school year.
We will be using the Cell Division: Mitosis and Meiosis Materials Kit to aid in applying cell division to genetics.
We will also be using the Origin of Life 8-Station Kit to replicate some early experiments which theorize Earth's early atmosphere. Later, we will also use the Transpiration 8-Station Kit to help us unpack this obscure concept.
Each kit described, plus the remaining I ordered, will be used to aid students in their goal to successfully complete this course and prepare them for the advanced study of science in college.
Labs are expensive and hard to source.
These kits provide a cost effective and simple way for us to bring labs to our kids.
I also want students to be comfortable in a college lab. They'll learn how to manipulate various tools and understand how to run an effective experiment. This takes time, and these labs, over the course of the year will teach students what it is to be a scientist, and how to do good science.
